GWMA Sub-Committees

A number of sub-committees have been formed to address specific issues of concern to the GWMA.  These committees have provided direction and oversight in developing tools and projects as part of the components of the GWMA tasks.  All sub-committee meetings are open to public participation.

Name of Sub-CommitteeDescription of Function

GWMA Steering Committee

The committee was formed for the purpose of developing the parameters of the structure for the operation and decision-making processes of the GWMA and its GWACs; as well as the relationship between the GWMA and the MOU signatories, other local, state and federal agencies and stakeholders associations, organizations and interested parties.  Members of the committee were the county commissioners of the three GWMA counties, CD staff, interested individuals and agency personnel.  The committee is no longer active.

Budget Oversight Committee

The committee consisted of representatives from the Lead Agency, GWAC stakeholder groups, CDs and GWMA staff.  The purpose of the committee was to oversee and manage the fiscal responsibilities of the GWMA in grant funding and expenditure.  The committee is no longer active and has been replaced by the GWMA Administrator staff position.

Characterization & Monitoring Committee

The committee consists of representatives from each of the five GWACs, CDs  and technical advisors from local, state and federal entities.  The purpose of the committee is to provide oversight in the development of various scientific tools and projects that support the overall GWMA effort to minimize nitrate in groundwater.

The committee’s activities include the Biennial Well Sampling project, the Hydrogeological Characterization Report, the U. S. Geological Survey Summary of Nitrate Concentrations in Ground Water of Adams, Franklin and Grant Counties, Leaching Vulnerability Index project, the GIS Database project, the Hydrostratigraphy Mapping project  and the development of a long-term monitoring program to measure BMP effectives.  The committee currently meets on a regular basis.

Information & Education Plan Committee

The committee consists of members representing the GWAC stakeholder groups, CDs, and GWMA staff.  SC Communications acted as the consultant on the plan.  The goal of the committee was to develop and implement a communication program to increase public awareness of, and voluntary support for, the GWMA and its plans and programs to reduce nitrate levels.  The Information and Education Plan developed by the committee was approved by the GWAC Executive Board in January 1999.  The committee is not currently active.

Staffing Committee

The committee was formed for the purpose of defining job tasks, developing job descriptions, and participating in the interview process during the hiring of GWMA staff.  Members are generally from the Lead Agency, CDs and GWAC Executive Board.  The committee meets on an as need basis to fulfill the staffing requirements of the GWMA.
